Review: The Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

As mentioned in my earlier post, here's my review of my recent stay at The Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The Westin Hotel is part of the Starwood Group.

Reservation:

Fast and easy over the phone. A credit card is required to secure the reservation. Cancellation policy is by 6pm on check-in date to avoid any cancellation charges. Confirmation is sent via e-mail promptly after the booking. A reminder e-mail is sent again 3 days before check-in. I find this really useful!

Check-in process:

Quite speedy and the front desk staff was really courteous and helpful. The front desk staff (forgot her name) even offer to put my wallet & hotel key card into my bag as I was busy carrying my toddler.

Some funny name concoction drink is also provided at the hotel lobby for hotel guests…. you can find name like Ginger Pineapple Drink, Chamomile Pear etc….cool!

I have also requested for a baby cot during reservation and the cot arrived within 5 minutes after I check into the hotel room.

Room:

We had booked the Deluxe City View room for RM250 nett / night using the Starwood Privilege voucher and thought it was a great deal since it was a public holiday & weekend (Normal rate for weekend cost around RM500++). The room comes with a king size bed, a long sofa, a writing desk & chair, 29’ TV, air-conditioner, in-room safe, mini fridge, mini kettle and complimentary coffee & tea making facilities. Other amenities provided include hair dryer, bath robe, slipper, laundry bag, complimentary drinking water (the hotel also provide additional bottled water during turn down service, if required!). At least they don’t limit the guest to 2 bottles / day like most hotel do.

Heavenly Bed? Not exactly as I find it too firm for my liking. The all-white linen was great though!

Heavenly cot? The complimentary baby cot is made from metal…..not something I like the most as I find the metal railing become really cold to touch in the air-conditioned room. It would be great if the hotel also provide cot bumper! Anyway, I think the cot mattress is okay as Anney slept well for the 2 nights.

Hotel view…..as it is a deluxe city view room, we have a room facing Pavilion and the surrounding buildings. Not too bad….I can see Gucci, Versace, Coach, Juicy Couture right from my room. The noise level is also minimal although the room is facing the busy Jalan Bukit Bintang.

Overall, the room is of good size with approximately 42 square meter with separate bath and shower.

Bath supplies:

Quite limited and I am rather disappointed with this. The hotel doesn’t even provide toothbrush and toothpaste....I thought this is the most basic bathroom supplies that a hotel could provide. However, they do have the basic no brand shampoo, hair conditioner, bath gel, lotion, cotton bud, cotton pad & nail buff. I was hoping to get either Crabtree & Evelyn or even Loccitane toiletries from this 5-star hotel. Unfortunately, no luck on this. Do they provide sewing kit? Sorry nope. And for guys, disposable shaver also not provided!

The limited bath supplies!

Swimming Pool:

Nice and clean but the water is freezing. Although the pool is outdoor (1 adult pool & 1 children pool), most of the time, the pool is shaded by some tall buildings around it and as such, didn’t get much direct sunlight. We dipped into the pool at 4 pm but the water was still cold! Hubby only dipped his leg and decided he has enough. Both Werney & Anney love the pool and they are really such water babies.

Westin Kids Club:

Well maintained with lots of games & toys for the kids. You can find slides, Playstation, Thomas train set, mini tent, board games, Lego, colouring activities, origami and lots of toys. Complimentary drinking water provided at Kids Club.

Very clean and they have a staff to supervise the kids. You can drop your kids from 2 to 12 years old at the Kids Club. The only drawback is it is chargeable at RM20/hour and subsequent hour at RM15.

In-room dining:

Good selection of fusion food and they even have a kids menu. Every kid meal order comes with a complimentary colour pencil set. The in-room dining meal was served within the stated time of 30 minutes.

Other dining:

We tried the Dim Sum Brunch at EEST. The brunch cost RM88++ / adult and half price for children from 4-12 years old. This is definitely considered expensive and luckily we got the voucher to dine for free for 2 pax. The dim sum is freshly cooked as and when you order from the menu. Boy, the food here is really yummy & fresh. I love the caviar on top of the siew mai.

A varieties of dessert. Must try the mango pudding with chocolate wanton on top!

Location:

Superb. Located in the golden triangle and along the busy Jalan Bukit Bintang, you can find major shopping complexes like Pavilion, Lot 10 and Sungei Wang within walking distance. Taxi is easily available in front of the hotel or could try out the monorail. The nearest monorail station is in front of the Lot 10 shopping complex, which is within 5 -10 minutes walk.

What I like most about the hotel? I find the service was really good and the staff really want you to feel at home.

What I hate most about the hotel? The high charges for kids club & food!

Overall, we enjoy our stay there and don’t mind coming back again.
